What is Sedation Dentistry

Sedation is one of the tools we use in our practice to relieve your anxiety of receiving dental treatment. Dr. Record has been using sedation dentistry for over 20 years, treating children, anxious adults, patients with special needs, and medically complex patients, safely in an out-patient setting. By using different techniques, he’s able to provide a stress-free, anxiety-free dental visit that seems like a dream.

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)

Our treatment is administered through inhalation via the nose, offering fast-acting effects that also wear off quickly. It’s designed to help calm and relax you, making it an ideal option for reducing anxiety or discomfort. With very few contraindications, it’s a safe choice for most individuals—and best of all, no escort is needed after treatment, so you can confidently continue with your day.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a highly effective option for patients who experience anxiety before and during dental visits. The great thing about using oral sedation is we can start reducing your anxiety BEFORE your visit! After a consultation visit, our doctors will determine: if you need a “little” or minimal sedation which is one drug +/- nitrous (laughing gas) to take the edge off or if you need a RDC “cocktail” that will be tailored just for you for a dream-like visit. There are many other reasons why oral sedation is recommended: bad gag reflex, longer procedures, physical pain of laying on your back, or you want to get all the work done in one visit. We can tailor your visits to last 1-4 hours and “no shots or IV’s needed”! Oral sedation is SEDATION and you will still need an escort/driver and follow our instructions to deliver safely. Speaking of safety, we use the latest monitors to keep a close eye on you throughout the procedure and are prepared for all emergencies expected. Dr. Record has spent 20+ years perfecting his techniques and is often the dentist of last resort before patients are sent to the hospital. Call us today!!

(IV) Sedation

IV (intravenous) sedation offers a faster and generally deeper level of sedation compared to oral options, while still allowing you to maintain your protective reflexes for safety. It also provides quicker recovery times and is especially well-suited for shorter, more intensive dental procedures. For added comfort, an oral sedative can be given beforehand to help you feel calm even before you arrive. IV sedation is often a successful alternative when oral sedation alone hasn’t been as effective or patients are unable to take oral meds.  Because we have an established IV catheter, we can administer other medication that can result in better post-operative pain control. It can also be combined with oral sedation—particularly for patients with special needs—making it a valuable option for those who require routine dental care outside of a hospital or operating room setting.
